Kidney Diseases Branch

Clinical, translational and laboratory researchers studying mechanisms and therapies for kidney diseases.
About the Branch

Branch Sections and Chiefs

Clinical Nephrology Section

Gregory G. Germino, M.D., Section Chief

We provide clinical consultation and dialysis services, supervise clinical training, and conduct clinical research in the NIH Clinical Center and its outpatient clinics.

Immunoregulation Section

Behdad (Ben) Afzali, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P., Stadtman Tenure-Track Investigator, Section Chief

The Immunoregulation Section studies how transcriptional signals are integrated within T cells to instruct fate decisions and direct effector function. The aim is to better understand perturbed immunoregulation in diseases of autoimmunity and to develop novel strategies that manipulate the balance between inflammatory and regulatory immune responses.

Kidney Disease Section

Jeffrey B. Kopp, M.D., Section Chief

We study the genetics, pathophysiology, and treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and immunologically-mediated glomerular diseases.

Polycystic Kidney Disease Section

Gregory G. Germino, M.D., Section Chief

We study the function of PKD genes, the pathophysiology of cystic disease and the molecular processes that regulate tubular morphology.

Renal Diagnostics and Therapeutics Unit

Robert A. Star, M.D., Section Chief

We conduct clinical and laboratory studies on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention on acute kidney injury in man and in experimental animal models.
